dogs take 2nd billing this morning

Man oh man, the buzz was all over the beach when I arrived at 7:15 or so. A ton of pot (yes, marijuana, and lots of it) was all in the water and on the sand at Dog Beach this morning.  Now, let's just say plenty of folk
s made sure there is much less of it around now then there was then.

Here's the news report that said cops were called around 8:15. I left around 8:10, so I missed that part of it.

http://weblog.signonsandiego.com/news/breaking/2008/05/pot_found_on_sand_and_in_water.html

My guess is that someone dumped it from the bridge coming in to OB overnight or something. Either way, some dog lovers got an unexpected treat this morning at their morning ritual.

[Mike proudly displays is "catch of the day." Even though he has a legal medicinal license, I hid his face. OB police are fairly cool and laid back, but I see no reason to encourage harassment.]

[A couple of water buds.]

[Leaves and stems in the sand.]

[Riptide wanted in on the action, too.]

to catch a crab

[This schnauzer found Riptide quite the chase partner. All was fun for all until he tried to go after Tempest. Game over.]

[A couple of hounds trying to join the game.]

[I noticed a larger than life "bug" running along with sand, with Riptide in tow. As I got closer, I see this little crab that had dug himself in to the sand and was pinching in the air at Riptide. Luckily for Rip, he didn't get any closer. That would have a been a funny pic, though. ;)]

it's a holiday?

You'd never guess it was Memorial Day today. Usually, the beach would be crowded with Zonies (visitors from Arizona) and families from east and north of the beaches. But, I guess a combination of cooler weather and sky high fuel costs kept most folks BBQing in their back yards this holiday.

The only site that said "Holiday" were the porta-potties by the restrooms and these two "peace officers" on ATVs.

There were very few dogs out today, too. It was like a normal Monday morning.

coldy, but a goody

Holy crap. The temperature dropped 20 degrees since last weekend. What is this? This Midwest? Despite the wind and brief rain, we had some fun in the (somewhat) sun today.

[The Frenchies claim a deserted boogie board.]

[Chubby say this is his best side.]

[This guy is a regular, and I finally caught him. He carries this ball with him up and down the beach. It's cool to see another dog with legs as short as Tempest's.]

[Copper and Riptide howl at Eric while he teases them.]

[Chubby makes his way across the channel to 'say hi' to one of the feral jetty cats.]

unlucky grunions

Hundreds (maybe even more than 1,000) grunions were washed ashore this morning from the last tide. Poor buggers.

quite the eventful wednesday

Got some stories today...

[Poor Pebbles. She has an argument with an RV, and lost. Luckily, her eye - and the rest of her - is going to be okay. The jerk in the RV took off, leaving her there. Such a scary incident, but she's getting the cone off today.]

[Pebbles again. I remember her on her 1st visit. She was rescued, and she's still very shy at the beach. She kept hiding behind her human's leg while I tried to snap her.]

[Doris is back! Our favorite Canadian flew down to watch Max, Katy & Sadie while Doug & Barb took a trip to Sacramento. Doris, the International Dog Sitter!]

[And because I'm a jerk, but a funny one, here's a pic of Rich and Hunter. Rich was complaining that Hunter's never on the blog (she's been featured in the past), so I snapped a shot of both of them. He's going to smack me tomorrow after he sees this. Hee hee.]

summery sunday

What an awesome morning. Clear and warm (almost too much), which means plenty of folks visited the each today.

[Who can't enjoy the sun and surf?]

[Riptide ran in to Guinness, the rottweiler that lives across the street. In homage to Dude, they played tug-o-war.]

[Riptide wouldn't let go, so Guinness took him and Tempest out in the water until Rip relinquished.]

[It's tough to get a decent shot of a German shepard. They are always bouncing around on alert, which is tough to catch. Maistri was sitting still just long enough for me to snap her.]

friday/saturday roundup

Friday was a big day, so I didn't get a chance to post any pics. Today was a nice, lazy day, with plenty of people and dogs to catch. Here are a few shots from both days...

[I see this guy often, but I haven't captured him before - until Friday. Love his beard!]

[Friday was the day for elusive doggies. This one tends to hide from me, too, but I got him on Friday, too. :)]

[This morning was odd. It was clear and hot all over town, except for over Dog Beach. There was a marine layer that covered the park. It kept us all cool, but with limited visibility.]

[Riptide loves new puppy energy. Tempest escapes as soon as she has a chance.]

[Nothing like a dip while playing fetch.]

just another thursday

[Quite a few posts on the board today.]

[Kings of the hill.]

[Katy - and Max along for the ride - decides this lab isn't going to get by easy chasing his ball and ignoring her.]

tuesday beach combers

[A little dog and its owner enjoy the surf.]

[These two were hilarious. They are about the size of shelties, but they were black. Anyway, they kept chasing their owner's shadow. She said it was funny for the first three years. ;)]

[This was as close as I could get for a pic. Every time he's chase TempTide, he'd make a loud growl like a bear. This made TempTide and me nervous, so we kept on walking...]

elsie and charlie

[Just seconds before this shot, Elsie and Charlie were wrestling, creating a canine ball, but here they are resting and out of breath.]

[Elsie is ready for her close-up.]

[Charlie isn't about to be ignored.]

another 'control your dog' rant

One of the many reasons we visit Dog Beach on Sundays is to meet up with our friend Carla, and her dogs JD and Kayne. This Mother's Day we were also lucky enough to be joined by Carla's daughter and her boyfriend, as well as Carla's sister Gail.

As we're walking along, sipping our coffees, a herding breed about twice the size of Riptide tries to corral him, barking and nipping at him. While Riptide is a big fan of the chase, he has no tolerance for being treated like sheep. He let the dog know to back off with a few jumps and nips back. The dog went after Tempest, as well, who quickly responded with her "angry bumblebee" reaction. A quick succession of bites and growls that leaves nothing to the imagination of her true feelings.

We quickly separated ourselves from the dog, trying to avoid a fight. A few yards later, he's at it again with Riptide. Riptide fights back, turning in to an aggressive tussle on both ends. I grabbed the collar of the other dog to get it off mine, and accidentally removed the collar. The owners barely moved to even see what was up, but I gave them back their collar with a "sorry, but your dog won't leave my dog alone, so I had to separate them." No response, and then they just walk past us.

Okay... So, we stop so they can go further down the beach away from us. If two dogs fight, they will continue if they share the space, no matter how many times you separate them.

Next thing you know, the herder is aggressively barking and nipping at an older brown lab in the water (this is after it charged and tried to herd several other dogs). It was clear the lab was uncomfortable, yet the herder's owners didn't even call him. ARGH!

We watched, stunned, and they let their dog bully every dog in its path. Carla finally lost her temper and yelled at them to control their dog and get in on a leash, if only to calm it down for a few minutes. A few words were exchanged, and we then distanced ourselves from them even further.

What started as a relaxing morning turned in to no fun for everyone.

I know those owners just thought their dog was "being a dog", but I am calling out to all of you with herding breeds. We know it's their nature, but other dogs don't like it. And while you might consider it playing or harmless, the other dog will let you know if it is annoying, agitating or downright unacceptable. Please watch and listen. Call you dog if it is harassing another. It may seem all in good fun, but that's how ugly fights happen. And if one dog is much larger or stronger than the other, the result can be tragic.

Let's all pay a little attention to our dogs. Not just how they are reacting to other dogs, but also how the other dog is reacting to yours. The beach should be fun. Let's keep it that way.

harassing hank

Poor Hank. He's the Lab in these shots. He just wants to play with his stick, but the bulldogs, Tempest, Riptide and Brody won't let him be.

[Sammy is quite proud of his 'kill'. Tempest gives him the sniff test.]

[Molly took the camera this morning to capture me holding Grace while Riley went after her other dog that sauntered on over to the non-dog beach side.]

riptide on a roll

[ TempTide greets some new guys, with Riptide hoping to get the chase on.]

[Whoa! I said chase me, not catch me!]

amigo makes a break for it

As we watched Maggie hand out treats to the waiting dogs, I noticed Amigo (Herb & Debbie's dog) head toward the other side of the parking lot. I don't see Herb anywhere, so this isn't good. I went after him, but TempTide followed me. Since their leashes were in the car, I stopped (don't want them walking in front of a racing surfer dying to see what the surf looks like this morning). Next thing I know Maggie - who's in a motorized wheelchair - speeds down the ramp, crosses the parking lot, and lures Amigo over to her with the treats she had on hand. She put the pedal to the metal! Then, Jane joins them with Alfie's leash and walks Amigo back to the beach. We found Herb, and all was great. There's just something special about a place where everyone knows each other - and their dogs - and looks out for each other. I love this place.

[Jane brings Amigo, along with Alfie and Boomer, back to the fold.]

[Maggie enjoys the dogs again now that everyone is back where they are supposed to be. Maggie gets her own do tomorrow!]

About This Blog

San Diego's Dog Beach (in Ocean Beach) is the original leash-free dog beach. It's a stretch of sand and ocean that is one big 24-hour playground for canines and humans. This unique place is home to many, and a special trip for others. There is always a story to tell. I'm lucky enough to visit Dog Beach nearly every day, and this blog is my way of sharing a wonderful place with anyone who loves dogs, the beach, or both.
