three amigos and amigo

Sorry for the lack of posts this weekend. I was just plain lazy. But, onward to today's pics...

[These 3 Golden Retrievers were wearing matching bandannas.]

["I'm ready for my closeup," says Amigo.]

friday quickie

Lots to do today, so we made a quick trip this morning. But I still managed to get a couple of usable shots.

[A Spaniel (of some sort) puppy that was about 6 months old. All over the place and as cute as can be.]

[Luke loves Tempest, and she let him touch her for a bit.]

little dog beach

It was little-dog day this morning. Minus the Husky, of course.

[Three groups meeting up at once. Where are the cocktails?]

[Claire is a bit of a harlot. She gets on her back every time she sees Riptide.]

[The elusive Diva poses with tongue next to her brother Beaker.]

the difference a day makes

[Overcast and just a few people today. A marked difference from Sunday.]

[One of the feral kitties on the jetty.]

[Kitty caught TempTide's attention. Too bad they can't swim!]

a weekend to be at the beach

[There were beaucoup people at the beach today. The temps were in the 100s inland and 90s at the coast.]

[Cooling of and socializing at the same time takes skill.]

[Susan lures her three pups in to the cool water.]

[Sean, Kelly & Conor haven't been to the beach in months. Their dog, Dude, is still recovering from shoulder surgery. Everyone was excited to see them, but hopefully Dude will join soon.]

[The end.]

salty dogs book

Writer and photographer (and occasional reader of A Dog's Beach) Jean Fogle published a fun collection of dog beach photos from her side of the country. She was kind enough to send me a copy of the book, and it's fantastic! And I'm not just saying that because there's a Frenchie on the cover.

It's like a dog beach blog in hardcover. :)

The photos are delightful, including the accompanying quotes and phrases. Just about every type of dog you can imagine is represented, including the Jack Russel Terrier (Molly) that her husband gave her as a gift years ago.

If you're at Dog Beach here in San Diego, or any beach or dog park across the country, you'll enjoy this book. It's a great gift idea for the dog lover in your life, too.

Salty Dogs is available at Amazon.
You can enjoy more photos from Jean and Molly's blog, mollitudes.blogspot.com.

13 days

It was super foggy this morning, but that didn't stop me from making out the shape of Pete & Muriel coming down the beach with a... PUPPY! Yep, after losing their beloved Sera two weeks go, Muriel couldn't do without a dog any longer.

She said she couldn't wait any longer than the 13 days. Sara (named in honor of Sera, of course), went home with Pete & Muriel on Father's Day. Today was her first trip to the beach. How fun to watch a puppy grow every day for the next year or so!

[Sara is not camera shy.]

[A little too close.]

[Sara lounging in the seaweed just before Riptide pounces.]

[A cocker spaniel that wanted in on the action, too.]

tempest gets a little run in this morning

This type of pic (running with another dog) is almost always of Riptide, but Tempest took chase this morning. Look at that little chubby girl run!

riptide meets his match

We've heard about Boz for the past couple of weeks, but we keep missing him. This morning, he was right there in front of us. Another Frenchie that loves to play and steal dogs from other balls. Riptide has some competition. ;)

[This ball isn't Boz's.]

everybody wants to play with riptide; tempest finds her own fun

[This pooch was the first to flirt with Riptide today. She's a foster dog [Great Dane mix] looking for a good home. She was extra sweet with people and dogs. It looks like she was bred a few times and then dropped off at the shelter. It's a shame people think of dogs as disposable! You can find out more about "Vanna" at www.bajaanimalsanctuary.com.]

[Another one steps up to the plate.]

[Tempest finds the crabs (and there have been plenty of them around lately) more entertaining than any of the dogs out there.]

farewell max

Another friend of the beach is gone. Doug and Barb's boy, Max, passed away on Saturday. He had a heart attack at Balboa Park while spending the day with his family. Not a bad place to go, if you ask me. He was 12 years old, and he loved to rest while on his morning walk on the sand with Katy & Sadie. We'll miss the summer daily snips of Max's long hair from Barb while she tried to stay on top of his shedding. :)

[Max back in January with his nearly full mane.]

lost dog found... twice

So, the story goes that our little Pekingese that was missing yesterday was found... twice. From what I understand, she was micro chipped (yeah!) - and the owner was called. Only it was the dog's owner from 5 years ago, when she was stolen. By this time, the new owners had put up signs looking for her. My guess is that someone stole her when she was a pup and sold her to the new, unsuspecting owners. Not sure if this is going to be a happy ending or not. :(

faces of tory

Tory is a pit bull mix that was a regular until about a year ago when she and her owner moved to Coronado. Coronado's nice, but it's not Dog Beach. Tory is a very sweet girl, but she can look terrifying to some folks. I caught of couple of her different looks while she watched a couple of other dogs play.

are you missing a pekingese?

Are you missing a recently groomed Pekingese? This little girl was at the beach this morning with no owner. A regular said she was there since at least 6 AM. When we saw her at 8 AM, he has recently coaxed her to him. She is wearing a pink studded collar with no tags. We're guessing she lives in Ocean Beach and somehow got out of her house/yard.

If you know this dog, please let us know. She's been recently groomed, so someone is missing her dearly.

[This little puppy was visiting from Arizona. I think its owner called it a Wheat Hound.]

unexpected loss yesterday

Pete and Muriel arrived at the beach this morning without Sera. She had a blockage (in her heart, I believe) and passed away yesterday. She just turned 10 the other day, and I was commenting on how young and healthy she looked.

Another one of our babies is gone. Pete & Muriel have been coming to Dog Beach for 30 years. With Sera for the past 10, another Dobie before that, and before that a German Shepherd.

Sera was friendly and intelligent - and boy, did she love to chase her ball. I'm sure Pete's Chuck-It was lonely this morning. If you see P&M, give 'em a big hug.

[Sera last August waiting patiently for Pete, with her ball.]

sundry sunday

From cool to warm in a matter of minutes, today was full of playful and interesting critters.

[Riptide and a puggle play a little bit of chase.]

[New breed alert: this is an Egyptian Pharaoh Hound. First I've heard of or seen.]

[A couple of stoic Great Danes enjoy a stroll with their human.]

[Stewie - the male version of Tempest.]

[Copper, the Rhodesian Ridgeback, stares at the sand fleas buzzing around his paws.]

About This Blog

San Diego's Dog Beach (in Ocean Beach) is the original leash-free dog beach. It's a stretch of sand and ocean that is one big 24-hour playground for canines and humans. This unique place is home to many, and a special trip for others. There is always a story to tell. I'm lucky enough to visit Dog Beach nearly every day, and this blog is my way of sharing a wonderful place with anyone who loves dogs, the beach, or both.
