guest post: a maryland dog's beach

I love my Dog Beach, but I thought it would be fun for everyone if I shared stories and images from other beaches around the world. This is my first installment of a regular series of guest bloggers who will share their favorite beach and dogs.

Our first guest post comes from Stephanie Sylvester all the way across the country in Severna Park, MD. Her tale of her beloved Molly shows just how special our pups are to us - and what a big part of one's life the beach can be.

You can learn more about Stephanie at her
Unkempt blog. Her post about Molly's passing turned on the water works, for sure.

If you have a beach for the pups you'd like to share, send me an email at jenATsandiegodogbeachDOTcom.

A Dog's Beach - Chesapeake Style

I have been enjoying A Dog’s Beach blog for a few months now. With every fiber of my being, I want to live in San Diego and play with dogs, so reading this blog either indulges my fantasy of living out my dream or it is used as a means to punish myself as I realize I will never convince my husband to move to the other side of the country. Fortunately, I can still enjoy some of the things that I include in my California Dreamin’. While I don’t have sunshine and perfect weather all year round, I can still enjoy dogs and beaches, even in the snowy winters!

For 2 ½ years, I had a beautiful golden retriever named Molly. My husband Matt and I had a lot of great local places to take our pup out for a swim. We would visit Down’s Park in Pasadena, MD, or drive to the beaches of Ocean City, MD. The place that I took Molly the most, is a very small community beach, nestled in our neighborhood of Severna Park, MD. Located on the Severn River which is just steps from our doorstep, it was a great place to take our pup out for some refreshing exercise! Molly wanted to go into the water, but she didn’t want to STAY in the water. Despite a few swimming lessons at the local Canine Fitness Center, she was hardly the most graceful Golden Retriever in the water!

About This Blog

San Diego's Dog Beach (in Ocean Beach) is the original leash-free dog beach. It's a stretch of sand and ocean that is one big 24-hour playground for canines and humans. This unique place is home to many, and a special trip for others. There is always a story to tell. I'm lucky enough to visit Dog Beach nearly every day, and this blog is my way of sharing a wonderful place with anyone who loves dogs, the beach, or both.

I'm a PR gun for hire that spends much of my day tied to the computer or iPhone. After moving to San Diego from the Midwest 14 years ago, I never looked back. I found my home. My home office is only a mile away from the Pacific Ocean, which allows me to enjoy mornings at San Diego's most excellent leash-free beach with my dogs. Social and exercise time for all of us.
