guest post: sitting on the sidelines

I know, I know, enough with the Frenchies. But, I met Liz (@iizliz) via Twitter and then in person. When I found out she had a Frenchie, too, well you can imagine. :) Hamlet used to go to the beach, but can't anymore because... (I'll let Liz tell the story)...

Thanks for inviting reader stories on your blog, Jen. I’ve been enjoying living vicariously through the lens of your camera and it’s a pleasure to gab about my dog here.

Our pup, Hamlet, is a Frenchie, just like your Riptide and Tempest! As a first-time dog “mom,” I spent a lot of time at dog parks when Hamlet was a puppy and my husband and I even purchased our first home in part because it was walking distance to an off-leash dog park.

It was such a highlight to take Hamlet to dog beach – both in Ocean Beach, where your blog is based, and in Coronado. In general we were warned that Frenchies don’t swim, but that didn’t stop Hamlet from playing in the surf. With a dog smile from ear-to-ear, Hamlet would take to the sand, running full-speed like a crazy-bunny, and he found great pleasure at barking at the waves.

Unfortunately the wave-barking turned into barking at other dogs and kids so we no longer take Hamlet to the beach or any unleashed dog park. Even though he gets along great with the two human kids we’ve added to our “pack” since Hamlet came into our family, we just don’t want to take the risk that he will nip at some kid or dog when he’s excited at the beach. We have worked hard to break the bad habits but this stubborn bully seems intent on proving he’s a Doberman in a 25-pound body.

So for now, we sit on the sidelines and watch the dogs in your blog have a great time on the San Diego beaches. I have some great memories of Hamlet making dog friends; one friend in particular was a brindle Frenchie girl named Bijou (and after talking to her dog moms, we discovered that the two dogs were actually related through bloodlines).

Hope you enjoy a few pictures of little Hamlet romping around on the dog beaches of Ocean Beach and Coronado, here in San Diego.

Liz Philips is a sleep-deprived, iced-tea addicted San Diego dog mom (and now mom of 2 human kids). She keeps a fun blog called www.BabyBlooze.com; photos of sad/mad/bad and completely adorable kids.

communication breakdown

This was one of two Beagles strutting their stuff. This one had a few "words" for anyone who happened to pass by.

This guy was just across the sand, instigating said "words." I don't think he was bothered. Do you?

bear & wally

Wally, another French Bulldog (boy, are they becoming more popular!) doesn't seem to mind a bit as Bear (Bearington Levy) taunts him with his disc.

i can't believe it!

Four days ago, July 20, was the 2nd anniversary of this blog! I can't believe I just let it sneak right by me.

If you haven't read our 1st post - ever or recently - take a look. It's fun to see why we started this whole thing: http://www.sandiegodogbeach.com/2007/07/beach-is-home.html

Yep. That's Tempest chasing hunting down big game in 2007. :)

kinda ugly

It was a bit ugly out there today. Overcast, fish parts strewn across the shoreline, ratting-looking dogs and mediocre iPhone shots that needed some Picnik help (effects).

Fish heads, fish heads, roll-y poll-y fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up. Yum! I mean, Shark heads, shark heads, roll-y poll-y...  Anyway. Saw this "cap" of a decapitated shark and wondered, "why would someone do that?" Then we saw parts of lobsters and fish all over the place. Someone cleaned out their traps/nets on the beach overnight. Lovely. I feel sorry for the little guy.

Here's Copper looking like he's just about to enjoy Riptide as an appetizer. Funny how things can appear. He was trying to hard to get Riptide to play. I think he may be the only dog that truly intimidates my boy. The irony. Copper is so sweet and gentle.

coastal cliches

Some more pics from the weekend. We went early this morning, when the sun was barely coming up, so not much to shoot. We'll try again tomorrow.

We got ourselves here a convoy!
[If you haven't seen this cheesy Kris Kristofferson movie from the 70s, I apologize.]

A boy and his Viszla.
[I know you'll love this one, Gennasus!]

Flower power, baby!

introducing... margaret (maggie) thatcher!

Newest - and cutest (I may be a bit biased, given that she's a Frenchie - with Tempest's coloring, no doubt!) puppy alert. Margaret Thatcher (Maggie) is 4 months old and graced our presence at the beach yesterday. Her first visit!

Maggie wasn't afraid of the water at all.

Kelp = toy.

Maggie enjoys her new posse - Riptide and puppy Molly (though, she was getting mauled a bit, so she took a time out or two).

This shot and the following are those of Maggie just plain enjoying the sand (as well as Riptide).

guest post: a maryland dog's beach

I love my Dog Beach, but I thought it would be fun for everyone if I shared stories and images from other beaches around the world. This is my first installment of a regular series of guest bloggers who will share their favorite beach and dogs.

Our first guest post comes from Stephanie Sylvester all the way across the country in Severna Park, MD. Her tale of her beloved Molly shows just how special our pups are to us - and what a big part of one's life the beach can be.

You can learn more about Stephanie at her
Unkempt blog. Her post about Molly's passing turned on the water works, for sure.

If you have a beach for the pups you'd like to share, send me an email at jenATsandiegodogbeachDOTcom.

A Dog's Beach - Chesapeake Style

I have been enjoying A Dog’s Beach blog for a few months now. With every fiber of my being, I want to live in San Diego and play with dogs, so reading this blog either indulges my fantasy of living out my dream or it is used as a means to punish myself as I realize I will never convince my husband to move to the other side of the country. Fortunately, I can still enjoy some of the things that I include in my California Dreamin’. While I don’t have sunshine and perfect weather all year round, I can still enjoy dogs and beaches, even in the snowy winters!

For 2 ½ years, I had a beautiful golden retriever named Molly. My husband Matt and I had a lot of great local places to take our pup out for a swim. We would visit Down’s Park in Pasadena, MD, or drive to the beaches of Ocean City, MD. The place that I took Molly the most, is a very small community beach, nestled in our neighborhood of Severna Park, MD. Located on the Severn River which is just steps from our doorstep, it was a great place to take our pup out for some refreshing exercise! Molly wanted to go into the water, but she didn’t want to STAY in the water. Despite a few swimming lessons at the local Canine Fitness Center, she was hardly the most graceful Golden Retriever in the water!

warning

I'm happy to report none of these signs appear on any of the dog beaches in San Diego. ;)

chaos & serenity

The beach can go from sheer mayhem to tranquility - and back - in an instant. Much of it depends on the dog (and human) energy, and sometimes it's just one's perspective.

Ronnie is holding Molly, our favorite new Bulldog pup. The dogs to the left are part of her extended family. While all seemed uncomplicated at the time, I love how hectic everyone, except maybe Tempest, looks here. Gotta caption for me?

And then seconds later - from nearly the exact same vantage point... Aaahhhhhh....

We're back in San Diego - on our home turf!

A couple of surfers and their dog arrive for some fun.

Tom (R) and friend have a deep discussion. Their dogs (Sissy on right) use this time wisely.

temptide's visit to san simeon

We've been back in San Diego for a couple of days, but I still have so many great road trip pics to share. This will be the last one for this week, but I'll probably post a few here and there over the coming weeks to break it up a bit.

If you're not familiar with San Simeon, it's home to the Hearst Castle and the elephant seals. We found a beach just north of where the elephant seals bask and howl (very cool, yet smelly, if you've never experienced it) just off US-1. Though the signs said dogs must be leashed, there were few people around and we let the dogs loose on the side where it was vacant. The kids had been cooped up in the car for so long, they needed to play!

The main ocean side beach as we went down the stairs.

To the right, there was a little fresh water lagoon. TempTide had fun chasing rocks Ronnie thew in the water.

And the grass.

And I thought this dead tree made a fine backdrop for a little "midget wrestling."

more santa cruz locals

More pics of local Santa Cruz people, dogs and vibe from 4th of July weekend (just north of the lighthouse)...

A couple of girls chased their dog back and forth having entirely too much fun.

Sticks and seaweed were favorite toys for this Pit.

The beach is small, so there was much running back and forth [we did the same thing, only a little slower ;)]

Another photog found the ocean a more exciting subject matter than the pups.

The artist was still at work when we first passed by. After running back to the car to get the iPhone, he was done and reviewing it from the same vantage point. Nothing says Santa Cruz like a larger-than-life peace sign in the sand.

About This Blog

San Diego's Dog Beach (in Ocean Beach) is the original leash-free dog beach. It's a stretch of sand and ocean that is one big 24-hour playground for canines and humans. This unique place is home to many, and a special trip for others. There is always a story to tell. I'm lucky enough to visit Dog Beach nearly every day, and this blog is my way of sharing a wonderful place with anyone who loves dogs, the beach, or both.
